The vast majority of images and videos released from space missions are not direct, untouched recordings. While many are based on real footage, they are often edited, enhanced, or entirely simulated with computer-generated imagery (CGI). This raises the question: why can't we always see the raw, unaltered view of space?

One major factor is the use of 360° cameras. These devices capture the entire environment around the sensor, but when the footage is flattened for screens, distortions appear. Platforms may look curved, objects stretched, and distances misrepresented. This technical limitation means even real footage can appear “unreal” to the average viewer.

Agencies such as NASA, SpaceX, and others also rely on CGI to communicate trajectories, orbital paths, and scientific phenomena in ways that conventional cameras cannot. These simulations are often combined with real footage to produce visually engaging images that are easier to understand. However, the resulting “clean” images can create an idealized, sometimes misleading perception of space.

Real recordings from rockets are far from pristine. Vibrations, lens distortions, dust, and lighting inconsistencies make them less cinematic. Iconic stratosphere jumps, like those performed by Felix Baumgartner or Alan Eustace, are prime examples of 100% authentic footage, conveying height, speed, and risk in a raw, unedited form.

The use of enhanced images serves a public relations purpose. Agencies understand that crisp, colorful, and cinematic visuals attract media coverage and viral attention. While these images are scientifically informative, they blur the line between reality and presentation, creating a gap between the actual experience of space and its portrayal.

Understanding these differences empowers viewers to critically analyze the imagery they consume, distinguishing between raw reality and stylized communication. It also highlights the incredible achievements of modern science, while reminding us that the universe’s true visuals are far more complex, subtle, and fascinating than any CGI can replicate.
